Signing a basketball player as a TE?
Signing Day commentary | Hoops love making Braden River's Young think twice about football offer from UF

To the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Young, it's a complex issue.
The apple of his eye is basketball. It's a relationship he just can't escape. He has been going steady with basketball ever since he was old enough to tie his own sneakers.
Football didn't come along until his junior year of high school, when he was talked into playing the offensive line.
Young said Gators head coach Will Muschamp personally made the offer this past weekend when Young visited Gainesville. He also has offers to play football at Purdue, Missouri, FAU and FIU.
But here's an even bigger caveat: Florida wants him to play tight end.
"Coach Muschamp and the tight ends coach told me that last weekend," Young said.
What's the holdup?
Young has an offer to play basketball at Division II Eckerd College.
Florida football.
Eckerd basketball.
Are we really having this conversation?
"I just don't know," Young says.
Florida's tight end last
season, Jordan Reed, is leaving school for the NFL draft.
Florida has the third-ranked recruiting class, according to Rivals.com, with two five-star and 13 four-star verbal commitments.
The list does not include a tight end.
Young could be that guy. He is big and athletic and, through basketball, has shown a soft set of hands. It's surely a reason Muschamp offered him. The Gators like to use the tight end in their passing game.

I'd be nice to sign a tightend. It's not like the conversion has never been done before but it's still a gamble. If anything he's big enough to block right now.

I've never seen him, but he most certainly is a better passer.

I haven't had time today but has anyone looked at a Miami or FSU board today? I'm sure there are some quality meltdowns going on.

Especially when they're 6'6" 260 lbs.
This is the one position that we didn't get a recruit for but we have four on our roster with one more possible (I think Staver will be switched).

Could be an interesting project. Anyone know what kind of speed the kid has. Or is he going to grow into more of an inline TE, already 260.

The Young I'd like to see in a football uniform is Patric! He'd be amazing!
This kid can play college b-ball at 6'6 260....but probably not at UF, unless he's a walkon. Charles Barkley is one of the only players that size who ever had much, long term, success. He'll be 270+ within a year or two of getting into the weight program, unless he's way overweight - like Demetri Hill or Haslem was.

Losing a recruit to my wife's alma mater is an outrage! I say an outrage. It will be all over the internet: "UF loses recruit to Eckerd!"

How is that even a choice? He can play both sports possibly? If he is a talent at Basketball then maybe he's heard our team is pretty good and in the national spotlight a bit more than Eckerd.
In the end we're all just chalk lines on the concrete Drawn only to be washed away

Unless he really wants to play basketball more, and he's been told there may or may not be any place for him on the basketball team, and that even if he walked on, he may never see playing time.
That said.....with someone of that size, you think he'd be a brick wall under the basket.

The fact that Eckerd is his only basketball option is telling. There are a ton of mediocre/bad D1 schools that have 6'5, 6'6 front courts such as: JU, Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast, etc. He should take the UF offer!

You act as if you are immune to the Eckerd College charisma. Like Alabama, they claim 44 Billion National Championships, but theirs are in the DSL (Drug Store League). They DID upset Wal-green's in the finals just last year.

The more I've seen of him the more I like him. He's a project but he's a very good athlete for big man.-
