Auburn's Oak Fanmark Cut Down

Postby rogdochar » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:17 pm

Auburn's Toomer Corner football pep-rally oaks have been cut down.
The trees died from rooter's poison ... errh root poisoning. One astute
Auburn student commented that they couldn't be dead with all those "new-growth" green leaves. A quick look at photos easily shows that
greenery is the saprophyte mistletoe: so they can kiss those goodbye.

Many wanted, before cutting down, the Bama-fan culprit strung up.
The original chemical trespass was evil. Sad and sorrowful.

Picture from the "rolling" event over the weekend. Those oaks were a far cry from what they used to be.

I hate Auburn, but traditions like that are what make college football. Sad what happened there.

They should replace all the soil there. Then do a fundraiser to pay
for the transplantation of "Fanmark Oaks". Hell, commemorate the
event by the ceremonial placement of a genuine "war eagles nest"
in it. ... uuh then a 5ft high perimeter fence with an 8ft gator as a
watch-guard. Make that a 3.5 foot fence = don't really want to keep
Bama fans out.

Reminds me when I was a freshman at UF in 1970 (ugh!) and just before the FSU game there were two arrows sticking out of the real penned up Albert-the-Alligator in the middle of campus. After that Albert was removed and we never heard his whereabouts again. For all I know he probably died of his wounds. Maskots and symbols are hard to preserve.

I believe that some FSU fans cut a foot off of an alligator some time prior to my attending. In any case such a gator lived in the pond by the art building where I spent some of my time waiting for my girl friend.

For the trees I hope that Auburn will replace them and have sufficient protection to prevent future issues.

The person who did this should get the max sentence under the law.

The actual "last straw" if you will for UF having a live mascot came a few years later, when the live Albert was kidnapped (or would it be gatornapped?), hung from a tree by its' tail, and painted garnet and gold; sadly, THAT Albert died from poisoning from the paint, and was not replaced.

The gator missing the foot (actually pretty much the entire leg) was over in Lake Alice as of the mid-90's. I remember attending one party down near frat row in '94 (I believe after the LSU game)... the gator came out of Lake Alice up to the party... someone opened the front door and it was standing at the bottom of the stairs... some people began freaking out, until a couple of veterans (of the party persuasion, not military) came up with the bright idea of unloading keg(S) of beer out a window into the gator's mouth.

The next morning UF's police arrived to find the gator semi- to full-blown unconscious with an empty keg next to it. It was quickly dubbed the "party gator" by those still standing that next day. Don't know whatever happened to that poor thing...

I'll pay $500 to the first Gator fan that puts Renegade down with a 12 gauge!

It's hard to believe that anyone would take a college rivalry to such an extreme as to kill ancient trees.

Not quite on that level, but I was in the section at the old Gator Bowl in '85 I believe, when a Bulldog fan poured a beer on Albert's head during the game. About a dozen people went to jail in the fight that ensued.

There's always going to be the lunatic fringe associated with or against a school or team. I'm sure we have a few.

Disney World has trees made out of concrete, so maybe Auburn should put up a couple in replacement.

What the Alabama fan did should further 'cement' the bad blood between the two schools for years to come.

While they can't do it publicly, my bet is that there is a large Alabama fan contingent that worship the ****** that killed the trees, and over time he will become a fixture in that fan base.

Well that really pizzes me off. :club: We must retaliate! Before next years game we will send select members of the student body to kidnap any and all Indians they encounter. Wait...was that politically incorrect of me to say that? I meant to say Native Americans. There. Fixed it.

Updyke gets 3 years (6mos mandatory) and $1,000 fine? Hardly seems like enough. :madevil:

3 years is a more than the majority of violent criminals get.

I'd make him spend every weekend for 10 years planting trees all across the Auburn nation.
