Will Yeguette & Scottie Wilbekin Appreciation Thread

Postby MasterG8tor » Tue Jan 29, 2013 1:31 pm

It's time we show these guys some love.

Scottie: Back in '10, we were in desperate need for a true point guard. Calathes left, Walker was more of a tiny SG and Kenny, too. We needed someone to come in and immediately take the reserve PG spot and here's a hometown kid that sacrificed his Senior year in HS to enroll early. He wasn't well known, probably too young to be playing basketball in the SEC but then he actually gave us meaningful minutes throughout his "Freshman" season. Two years later, he's receiving SEC Player of the Week honors and has been our best true PG since Taurean imo.

Yeguette: Same year. We needed a big guy badly. Speights was turning pro early. Erik was showing that he was more of a perimeter player. Young was...young. And Tyus and Macklin were going to be gone soon. Yeguette came in and almost immediately gave meaningful minutes and, two years later is starting to put up better numbers than Patric. And he's done it by playing consistent hard-nosed, blue collar basketball.

These guys weren't supposed to be big but the minutes they've been able to put in have been huge for us.

Yup, those guys have been great and just bring high energy....similar to Noah used to. I am excited that they will be back for next year. I remember last year when Yeguette was ruled out of the tourney with a broken foot, I really thought that was it for the team. I am still surprised that they went as far as they did without his defense and rebounding. Cant wait for everyone to get healthy and have a solid 8 man rotation...Im really liking Michael Frazier as well.

The other thing here is that these guys were not high rated recruits. They were finds that Billy got and maybe he got a little lucky, but you need some of these "finds" to really be successful. There are times when Scottie is the best player on our team.

You could tell RIGHT AWAY that both of these kids were gonna be good for us because they give everything they've got out on the court. They out hustle and out play just about everyone on the other team and they both play tough and don't ever back down. I remember The Roundtable would make fun of Scottie and Billy D and said it was a desperate reach by Billy D to sign a 17 year old PG. 3 years later and here we are and Scottie has been EVEN BETTER and then some in all phases of his game. He plays tough defense, he can really handle the ball, and his shooting has gotten better. You can tell he is very fundamentally sound. Yugette brings a ton of energy to the court in defense and rebounding and also getting lose balls and he is not afraid to body up someone and crash the paint. They both play smart on the court. I have met both kids and gotten their autographs after a couple of games at the O-Dome and they are both really cool to talk to. Thanks for being Gators guys!! Go Gators!!

Mentioned before, Scotty was SEC player of the week. Wilbekin
and Yeguete are just the type players to work-right in Billy-ball.
A pleasure to watch and, I bet, a pleasure to coach... And what
I like best is their improvement-graph is a continuous upslanting
line. And one of them is doing it still left with some French in him!

Agree with Wobble. Scottie isn't a true point guard but he hustles and plays great d like u want. The true point guard is coming in next year. Yeguette is a special player. Rebounds like he is 7 feet tall and so smart. He doesn't have to score a point and he can impact a game.

I call Will Yeguete Frenchie, and Frenchie is my favorite UF basketball player. Kid just works his ass off every game, and he's improved his game immensely since his freshman year (especially free throw shooting). I've always liked Wilbekin on the defensive side of the ball, and I'm coming around on him on offense. He's starting to take much smarter shots and distribute the ball in accordance with the offense (something Walker really struggled with at times). He still needs to not turn the ball over as much, though.

IDK, Scottie may not be a true point guard, but his stats say that he's doing pretty good at what he's supposed to do: dish out assists and don't turn the ball over. Let's compare some stats with some other PGs on top teams:

Assist to Turn Over Ratio
Scottie (Gators) = 2.61
Mark Lyons (Zona) = 1.07
Phil Pressey (Mizzou) = 1.94
Trey Burke (Mich) = 3.73 (likely the best PG in the country)

Scottie's holding his own on the offensive side of the ball (over 9 points per game) and managing the offense efficiently, while being one of the toughest on-ball defenders in the country.

Think both are great but am also pleased that the whole team seems to work together, get along well, and truly like each other..kinda like the 04s.

Certain enjoyment are the rides = each game watched. There's
the typical start-off fret, then within 3 minutes ya get to sit back
and watch with unimpeded enjoyment. Thanks to all D-Gators.

Saturday, if Scottie has to chase that waterbug Henderson, expect
his offense to suffer. Gonna be interesting to see how frustrated
Henderson gets.

Although they switch a lot (playing great team D), Boynton will be the main defender on MH while Scottie will be taking their PG.

MY wrong. I hope we switch on him. Pitty Boynton if he has to keep
up with the 'amphetimized'. Then KB's scoring will suffer.

These two exemplify what this team is all about. Clutch players who are just as excited about playing defense as well as offense. I am hoping though that maybe we have bsome tougher games to play. As of right now, there is no team in the SEC that can stay with this team. Need some games were we win by 10 or so. Maybe I am wrong. I just like to see the guys win games like Arizona and KSU.

Yet I do not believe Arizona nor KSU could stay with these guys right now.

Nope! I was wrong, per the usual. Scottie was hounding that dude most of the night.
