At least they're not the Fightin' Pelicans. Owner Tom Benson hopes the new name will unite the city around the team.

Of course the NBA also has a few teams with "softer" mascots like the Magic, Jazz, Clippers, Suns, Spurs, etc.

That name is nothing new. There was a famous Double A minor league baseball team for 60 years in New Orleans called the Pelicans. And Louisiana is the Pelican state.

It is a great name for a New Orleans team. And New Orleans is a great city.
