"Icing" the kicker
Is there a bigger ****** move in professional sports? Especially the ultra-last-second-right-before-the-snap variety? These guys are freaking pros....do coaches really think that giving these guys a practice kick somehow hurts them? Imagine giving a pro golfer a practice shot before having to hit the shot of the tournament? Just plain stupid.
Nothing warms my heart more than seeing that first kick go wide right and seeing the look on Carroll's stupid face. Of course the next kick, the one that counts, goes right down the middle. Because the kicker is a pro, not some high school kid.

Also, expect a rule change disallowing "practice" kicks on the field during timeouts like Justin Tucker of the Ravens did yesterday.

D-Bag move and it's great when it backfires. Couldn't have happened to a better coach on a bigger stage. The best part is when Carroll tried to act like no one called the TO, but the replay clearly showed him whispering sweet nothings into the zebra's ear.

Waste of time. Just let the guy kick. 60 extra seconds will not change anything.

He wasn't upset about pretending not to call a timeout. He knew he did. Pete was just mad because he didn't think it was right for the Atlanta kicker to have a free practice kick. But as the NFL currently is, it's not a penalty and is
allowed.

Yup. Never liked him. Seems like a fun guy and he has a solid team, but he really left USC in a bad place. Sh*t move by that guy.

Just out of curiosity, is simply saying time out sufficient for a time out to be called, or does the hand signal have to be made? I saw a .gif of Pete whispering into the ref's ear, but i never saw the actual hand signal.
I know in basketball you have to make the signal, not sure if football's different.

The practice kick should be allowed. If you don't want the guy to kick it, don't wait until the last second to call the time out. That time out right before the snap is freaking bush league nonsense.
I'm glad Carroll got burned by it. He's a turd.

Kiffen can recruit, especially at a program like USC, but he can't coach a lick. I hope he stays there. They'll suck as long as he is.

Gotta say, I lived in Seattle for 20 years and wanted them to win but can't stand Pete. On the other hand I went to Georgia Tech and didn't mind Atlanta winning either.

If you really want to get in a kicker's head, don't call the timeout. No one would expect it.

OP is referring to the practice kick in Denver/Ravens game. The first OT expired and during play stoppage, a coach for the Ravens came running onto the field with a ball and while everyone was standing around, the coach spotted it and the kicker took a whack at it.

The only way to get in the kicker's head is to "over the top" act like your going to call a timeout and then don't. Never give the guy a practice stroke.

I don't see anything wrong with that either. Who cares?

Re: "Icing" the kicker
Meh, if its your team you want to do everything possible to win the game. I personally don't believe that it's effective especially if you allow the kicker to get a kick off. But if the coach thinks it can help win then why not.
Who cares anymore

Re: "Icing" the kicker
The real idiots are the ones that save their last timeout to ice the kicker and they could have called it with 25 seconds left and at least given their team a remote chance of getting across midfield and kicking their own field goal once the opponent makes theirs.
I've never understood why coaches on defense allow offenses to wind the clock down to 3 seconds to kick a game-winner when they still have time outs left... Stupid.
