Machen staying!

Postby cuuf » Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:00 pm

Looks like he won the stare down with the Scott.

Good for the university and the athletic program!

I thought Machen was leaving on his own? If so, what stare down contest did he win? Was he asked to step down?

Most likely they weren't thrilled with the pool of finalists. This way they can crash the search without the public embarrassment of telling a bunch of sitting presidents they are not up to snuff.

This is not good news. The academics have been slipping for several years under him. In one of the most baffling moves by a university president, he lets the Computer Science Department fold (duh, where is the future, Machen?). To top it off, he is trying to turn the tailgating game day experience into a duplicate of BYU.

I was hoping he would be gonzo. The sooner the better.

according to a few within the UF staff and community, including the Dean of one of the colleges, this is definitely NOT a good thing.

Not the most popular or supportive of those under him.

He was leaving as a protest over funding issues. Rick Scott had to be careful because the UF fan base is one he can't pisss off. This just delays it all until the politics stabilize. NOBODY wanted this job. This was easily our best option.

Machen has done an outstanding job at improving the academic stature of the university. This has come despite an almost 50% decrease in funding over the same time period. He innovated the way the university has done business and greatly increased the stature and ranking of the Health Science Center with the addition of the Cancer Hospital, Clinical Translational Research Institute, and Emerging Pathogens Institute. He is a strong advocate for accountability and supporting faculty the merit it. As mentioned earlier, he told Scott to shove-it with his attempt to take over the University and basically called his bluff, now Scott had to come back to him with hat in hand. This will help the university. In addition he is a big supporter of college athletics and understands their importance to the overall vitality of the university.
