New Orleans...........Pelicans??
For those of you that missed the news last night, the NBA franchise in New Orleans is about to change their nickname to the Pelicans, in a move that will help Charlotte revert back to the Hornets nickname. The only reason I'm even sharing this story is for the HILARIOUS responses on the ESPN article.

Upon hearing the news, Anthony Davis raised his single eyebrow in disbelief.
At halftime fans will try to shoot a 3-pointer into the mascots mouth...
BREAKING NEWS: In response to the horrible nickname, the NBA has announced that it will fine the San Antonio Spurs an additional $250,000.
Anthony Davis will retire the greatest Pelican of all time.
Hasn't this city already been through enough?
Dwight Howard's free throws are no longer the biggest joke in the NBA
is the logo going to have them covered in oil?
Can we make jokes yet on how Austin Rivers was too young to leave the nest?
Drew Brees to donate 1 million dollars to N.O. basketball naming disaster...
Pelicans are known for being brave and helping others, in this one documentary they helped a clown fish find his son.
ESPN's Headline Tomorrow:
"Suh Doesn't Like Name "Pelicans". Should He Be Suspended?"
WEEEE WILLLL WEEEE WILLLL FLOCK YOU
I checked my calendar about 12 times, and it's still not April 1st
If you look closely enough, you can see that Anthony Davis's unibrow resembles a pelican in flight

Gets the Hornets name back where it belongs.
New Orleans FEMA-Teat-Suckers would have been better than Pelicans.

It would be awesome if they could pick up Marcin Gortat in a trade. His beak holds more than his bellycan.

Agreed. There's only one hornets nest. WTF does a bobcat have to do with NC anyway? At least you can find a pelican in New Orleans...or at least you could before Katrina and BP.

It Someone Incognito Decided to post, I'm sure he'd say this is racist.
Why? There are two main categories of pelicans, white and brown. White is the majority, brown is the minority, in overall pelican numbers. So I'm sure that the new owner has to be buyest.

Re: New Orleans...........Pelicans??
If I recall correctly (and sometimes that's a big IF), they were called the hornets because during the Revolutionary War, some British General referred to the area as a "hornet's nest".
Bobcats came from that team's first majority owner whose name was Bob.
The LA Lakers were once in Minnesota...land of a 1,000 lakes.
The Utah Jazz were once in New Orleans...jazz makes a lot more sense in NO that it does in Salt Lake City.
So let's rename Minnesota Timberwolves the Lakers and call the Lakers the Stars. The NO team becomes the Jazz and the Utah team becomes the Mormons.
I like the idea of a team name and history staying in place, like the NFL did with the Browns but shouldn't the Ravens be the Colts and the Colts be the Hoosiers?
The Rams name would be mothballed until a team to move to LA. St. Louis would be the Cardinals. Arizona would be the Roadrunners (or maybe the Coyotes).
Or maybe we're over thinking this a bit?
Alex.

Make Utah change their name to the Beekeepers, Killer Bees or the Hive and give N.O. their rightful name back!
Meantime, this is some funny stuff...

Re: New Orleans...........Pelicans??

The name Pelicans makes perfect sense for New Orleans. Louisiana is officially the Pelican State in addition to its other moniker the Bayou State.

The New Orleans Pelcians were a famous minor league baseball team that was in the Crescent City for decades.
As alluded to above by Alex, the nickname Hornets for Charlotte, North Carolina comes from the American Revolutionary War when Banastre Tarleton referred to that area of North Carolina and South Carolina as a Hornet's Nest of rebellion.
The name New Orleans Pelicans is a great name.

Pretty good vid here by a grassroots group that was trying to get the Hornets name back before this latest news...that Hornets buzz sound effect at the end brings back memories of how the old building in Charlotte (since been razed) would rock and people would go bat **** crazy when that sound effect hit...
