Seven Gators named to 2012 AP All-SEC teams


Seven members of the Florida Gators football team were voted onto to the 2012 All-SEC Teams on Monday, as chosen by Associated Press voters.

Florida had six players selected to the first team: redshirt junior tight end Jordan Reed, senior running back Mike Gillislee, redshirt senior kicker Caleb Sturgis, junior defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, junior safety Matt Elam and sophomore punter Kyle Christy.

Gators sophomore cornerback Marcus Roberson was placed on the All-SEC second team.

Florida head coach Will Muschamp finished second to Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin in SEC Coach of the Year voting. Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel won SEC Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year, while Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones took home SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The Gators had the second-most total All-SEC selections with seven, one behind Alabama’s eight. However, Florida’s six first-team nods were the most in the conference.

Nah, it's like I said weeks ago re: this... At UF, you're supposed to win and contend. That's the Status Quo. You don't get awards for maintaining the Status Quo. You get awards when you're a new coach beating the #1 team in the US with a (semi-)new QB that's winning the Heisman when you were supposed to suck.

Nah, it's like I said weeks ago re: this... At UF, you're supposed to win and contend. That's the Status Quo. You don't get awards for maintaining the Status Quo. You get awards when you're a new coach beating the #1 team in the US with a (semi-)new QB that's winning the Heisman when you were supposed to suck.

Even though you only played 3 teams in the top 25 and lost to two of them? aTm had a much easier schedule than UF and lost more games, including the head-to-head. They played early and aTm was the favorite, so which was the most surprising team? Gators didn't maintain the status quo, they improved by 5, going on 6 wins.

I disagree. Unless Sumlin gave birth to Johnny Manziel during the offseason, he is not deserving. Yes, he improved TAMU over prior years but he is the beneficiary of a special player that truly carried the team. One that he did not recruit nor did he develop.TAMU still has a Big 12 defense but now they have a player that can outscore the other team.

Will transformed an entire culture and team to achieve at levels we never thought possible. Here at UF we are used to coaches NEVER getting the recognition they deserve. Just ask Billy Donovan.

Dad, I agree with you. What Will was able to accomplish was nothing short of amazing. But Sumlin had a good year as well. Possible Heisman, beat #1 Bama and had a hell of a year, their first, in the SEC. Not saying his resume is better than Will's, I don't believe that, but he was deserving of recognition. I think Will should have won it but I'm okay with Sumlin taking it.

As far a Johnny is concerned, great players make great coaches.
