Thought about that exact thing while the play was happening... how funny would that have been? Unfortunately, in todays political correctness, UF would take a major PR hit.

I know the middle linebacker on that Gator team, named Gary Peterson. He was/is a smart dude-he received an engineering degree from UF.
I have always wanted to ask him what happened and if he was a part of that play. From the reaction of Head Coach Doug Dickey, it appeared he (Dickey) did not know this was going to happen.
I always thought that play was funny as hell...

Gator history indicates the defensive captain asked coach to let miamuh score so Reaves could get the ball and a shot at the record. Coach didn't know his D was going to take the obvious flop. He thought they were going to just give 80% and act like they were trying.
caine history says that coach planned this for 6 months, requesting authorization from the AD, prez and every state senator who was a Gator alum.
I'll admit, I'm amused by it, but at the same time it's not really something I brag about. It actually is more of a bush league move that we'd expect from the caine$ or nole$. JMHO - probably not the most popular...

Gee our last play seemed like we did not care that much if he ran for a TD.

Looked a lot like a flop to me. No one bothered to touch Manuel and Watkins was signaling a TD. That was certainly the funniest moment of that game.

I believe that Gary Peterson was the defensive captain.

Re: The Gator Flop
Very few can say this, but I was there!! I was in high school, Dad was finishing his Specialist in Education at scUM, and, believe it or not, I was a scUM fan back then (that all changed when I set foot on UF's campus in Sept 1973).
I was watching through narrow range binocs, and didn't see the entirety of the field, but I saw the Gators fall down, and asked my dad what happened. None of us knew why at the time, until reading about it the next morning in the Miami Herald.
The bitterness of that event permeates the scUM mythology to this day. I'm sure that scUM students who have never seen UF play them (last game was in the '08 NC season) know about it, and act as if it's an affront to THEM. Expect to see it and hear more about it b4 we take them out next year in Sun Life Stadium.
