Larry Munson passed away today....
regardless of fan loyalties Larry Munson was a classic in the world of broadcasting. He was 89 and died of complications from pneumonia.

I thought he was a championship bowler?

Sounds like he lived a long and good life though...

It's definately our losss. He was great on the radio. I had pneumonia last year but I am only 45. It's a shame that he could not watch the SECCG.

Definitely a legend and will be missed. The Lindsey Scott play would not be as memorable for Georgia or Florida fans if it wouldn't be for him.

Took his hobnail boot and went home.

A true classic and fine man. Despite the games he called against us that immortalized plays we Gators would rather forget, he was a true original and was devoted to his Dogs in the way that his contemporary Otis Boggs was devoted to our Gators. An outstanding broadcaster, he will be missed not just by Dog fans everywhere, but by college football fans throughout the SEC and the nation.

He was the best (homer) announcer I ever heard.birdawg wrote:regardless of fan loyalties Larry Munson was a classic in the world of broadcasting. He was 89 and died of complications from pneumonia.
I was working on a roof by the Suwannee River once(in the the 70s) listening to a
UgA Clemson game and he made you feel like you were there.
I detest dogs and their fans for the most part but Munson was great. His voice was unique but passionate about his junkyard dogs.
btw I think your announcer should be a homer.

I lived in Columbia, SC for 12 years, mostly in the 90s. I remember this one. First you hear Munson, and then you hear Fulton (USC). Munson telling the Dawgs to lay down with the clock running out and USC out of timeouts is classic Munson.

He was a true legend in his field and will be missed.
When I was living in Atlanta in the early 90's, I would catch his broadcasts (of course when the Gators weren't on), and he had a special way of delivering the action and describing the moment.

He was great on the radio but I certainly appreciated him more around 1990!

I always hated hearing him on the radio. Prayers go out to his family though.

I agree. Your radio announcer has to sound like he is connected to the team or it is likely to be boring or either you won't care as much about them. Here is a nice tribute GTV did for Larry.

That is a great one to come up with. I remember that. You could feel the pressure of the clock. "lay down guys......". He was right. Shouldn't have let the RB get up.

Well said, Savannah, and I could not agree more. I will always remember him for "Run, Lindsay, Run"...followed by the beer I threw on an FSU fan who was cheering against the Gators that day. Rest in peace, Larry. You were an outstanding broadcaster and a true tribute to your Dawgs.

He had the ability of being a homer while never disrespecting the other team.

Mark Bradley of the AJC wrote the best description I have read yet....."Anyone could give you the down and distance. Only Munson could give you the agony and the ecstacy."
